New Life Community Alliance (NLCA) recently partnered with Science for Georgia and staff from Commissioner Ted Terry’s office to host the Environmental Justice Town Hall – an event that brought together South DeKalb residents, advocates, and local leaders to focus on pressing environmental issues in the community.

The town hall featured updates on DeKalb County’s ongoing environmental justice efforts, with speakers highlighting key milestones, current challenges, and areas where continued community advocacy is most urgently needed. Attendees left with a clearer understanding of the work underway and how they can play a role in advancing environmental equity in South DeKalb.

A newly unveiled community data map also gave attendees a powerful visual tool for understanding the environmental impact zones across the region. By highlighting areas most affected by pollution, development, and neglect, the map offers valuable context to guide future decisions around resource allocation and policy advocacy.

Most importantly, the morning centered around dialogue. Residents asked thoughtful questions, voiced deep concerns, and shared personal stories of how environmental issues have touched their lives. Their insights sparked meaningful conversations about both short-term actions and long-term strategies, reinforcing how essential community input is in shaping the path forward.

We’re grateful to everyone who took the time to attend, speak up, and stand with us. This town hall was a reminder that environmental justice is not just about policy: it’s about people. And when people come together with purpose, change is possible.
