From Homelessness to Honors: Rhonda’s Story

When Rhonda Kay Sims-Thomas crossed the stage at Clayton State University on May 9, 2026, it marked more than the completion of a bachelor’s degree. It was the culmination of years of perseverance, sacrifice, and determination in the face of extraordinary challenges.

Born at Balboa Navy Hospital in California and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Rhonda grew up in a military family. Both of her parents served in the United States Navy, instilling values of discipline, resilience, and service that would guide her throughout her life.

After graduating from South Mountain High School in 1987, Rhonda entered the workforce, building experience across customer service, security, retail, and logistics. Along the way, she pursued higher education, attending several institutions, including Grambling State University, Tuskegee University, and Southern University at Shreveport, where she earned an Associate of Science Degree in Biology in 2003.

At the time, Rhonda hoped to complete a bachelor’s degree in biology and eventually work at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. But like many people, life took unexpected turns.

After earning her associate degree, Rhonda focused on supporting herself through work and managing everyday responsibilities. During that time, a new dream began to emerge: attending law school. She set her sights on becoming the first person in her family to attend and graduate from law school.

In Fall 2024, Rhonda took a major step toward that goal by enrolling at Clayton State University, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Pre-Law. From the very beginning, she excelled. Rhonda maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA and earned a place on the President’s List for Fall 2024, Spring 2025, Summer 2025, and Fall 2025.

Yet behind those academic achievements was a difficult reality. After losing her job at Amazon, Rhonda experienced homelessness. Despite the uncertainty and stress that accompanied her situation, she remained committed to her education and refused to abandon her goals.

Her most difficult season came during her final semester in Spring 2026. While attending school full-time and completing an internship with the Clayton County District Attorney’s Office, Rhonda sought emergency shelter at New Life Church in Decatur. Even while navigating housing insecurity, she continued to excel academically and successfully completed her degree.

Today, Rhonda resides at Frontline Response’s Emergency Shelter and is already focused on the next chapter of her journey.

She has been accepted into Georgia State University’s master’s degree program and will begin classes in Fall 2026. At the same time, she is preparing for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), which she plans to take later this year. Her ultimate goal remains clear: to attend the University of Georgia School of Law and become the first attorney in her family.

Rhonda’s story is a powerful reminder that circumstances do not define a person’s future. Through determination, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to her goals, she has continued moving forward despite every obstacle placed in her path.

At New Life Community Alliance, we are honored to have been part of Rhonda’s journey during a critical season of her life. Her story reflects the resilience we see every day in the individuals and families we serve.

Congratulations, Rhonda. Your community is cheering you on, and we cannot wait to see what comes next.
