For Donnayia Lanes, home was more than just a place—it was where she and her husband raised their 12 children and grandchildren, where laughter filled the rooms, and where memories were made. But in March 2023, everything changed. A tree crashed into their house, leaving it unlivable. Rain poured through the broken roof, and despite countless pleas for repairs, their property manager ignored the damage. With nowhere to turn, she reached out to Code Enforcement and the Department of Community Affairs (DCA), hoping for help. Instead of assistance, she received eviction threats from the property manager.

In August 2023, Donnayia’s family lost everything. Their belongings were thrown out, and their home was gone. Forced into a motel, they faced months of uncertainty, struggling to stay afloat mentally, physically, and financially. Due to her debilitating illness, her husband had to reduce his work hours to care for her and the children.

But even in the darkest times, hope found its way to her. Through a referral, Donnayia connected with Mrs. Moore and the Motel to Home Program at New Life Community Alliance (NLCA). Designed to help families transition from temporary housing into stable, permanent homes, the program became the lifeline for her family. After seven months in a motel, her prayers were answered—in April 2024, she, her husband, and their kids finally had a place to call home again.

But the support didn’t stop there. NLCA’s Food Distribution Center provided essential groceries to help them get back on their feet. Inspired by the kindness she received, Donnayia now volunteers in a local food pantry, helping to feed those facing similar hardships. Giving back has become her way of expressing gratitude and ensuring that others don’t feel alone in their struggles.

Donnayia’s story is a testament to resilience, faith, and the power of community. She has endured unthinkable loss but has emerged stronger, determined to help others the way NLCA helped her. Her journey is proof that with the right support, even the most difficult chapters can lead to new beginnings.
