A small business owner and medical device program manager by day, Tia Adams’ weekday world is filled with product design, business and commercialization strategies. But once a week, like clockwork, she steps into a different role: Student Success Advisor for the New Life Community Alliance GED Program.
Tia gets to walk alongside staff and other volunteers to see transformation happen in the lives of GED students. She’s quick to shine the spotlight on others, celebrating the volunteer team for their behind-the-scenes dedication. “We have so many accomplished people in the GED program – real gems who come from some incredible backgrounds united by one mission: to help others,” she says. “I’m honored to be a part of a team that genuinely cares.”
A member of New Life Church for over 17 years, Tia was originally drawn by the NLCA’s commitment to community outreach. “What makes this church different,” she says, “is the GED program and the services NLCA offers.” That distinction, the care for community, not just congregation, is what melted her heart. “That told me that they were willing to go above and beyond, not only for the people that attended the church, but the community they resided in.”
It was during an Open House a year ago that Tia walked into the atrium and responded to a call to serve on the GED program team. “It was a full circle moment,” she recalls. “That’s what drew me to the church – and then I was able to join the ministry and actually help the students.”
Tia’s love for education and her passion for giving back to the community found a perfect fit in the GED program. Tia received a BS from Clark Atlanta University in chemical engineering and an MBA in Business from Florida A&M University. She says she did a lot of charity work as a kid but her passion is education. “For me, it’s about helping people grow. It’s mentorship. It’s advocacy. It’s coaching.”
Though she’s not in front of a classroom teaching math or reading, Tia plays a critical role. She ensures students have what they need to succeed – emotionally, practically, and spiritually. She ensures the lights stay on and spirits stay high. She’s the prayer warrior, coach, advocate, and cheerleader for students taking bold steps to rewrite their stories.
“I mostly help in advocating for them in a time of need or despair: making sure their bills are paid, reinforcing high esteem, and stressing the importance of showing up, focusing, and studying,” she says. “It’s all about keeping them encouraged.” Every week, she meets students facing overwhelming odds – young parents, survivors of abuse, individuals who’ve experienced housing instability or economic hardship.
“Nevertheless, I see limitless potential. I see strength. I see people who refuse to be defeated by life’s circumstances. Watching them grow from hesitant learners into confident graduates – it’s nothing short of inspiring,” she says. “These students are some of the most driven, determined people I’ve ever met. Some don’t have transportation, and have to walk miles and still show up. They’re fighting for their future.”
What excites her the most? “I’m most excited about their transformation,” she says. “Seeing them go from doubtful to determined – from surviving to thriving – it makes every effort worth it.” Tia watches something powerful unfold. “You see their confidence level rise. It’s inspiring.” Their transformation fuels her passion.
Tia says that inspiration helps her step outside of herself and say, “Wow, there’s so much opportunity beyond your personal life, being able to influence and advocate and cheer and help and give resources to individuals who have great adversities.” She says seeing the drive and tenacity of the GED students puts things in perspective for her and helps her deal with her personal challenges.
Tia believes NLCA is more than a faith-based nonprofit. “What is offered is extraordinary. It’s a 360 of community support, meeting real needs. You never see that!” From GED coaching to grooming services, clothing stores to financial coaching, she says she wishes people knew that “We go above and beyond. We care and we’re passionate. We’re not just a church. We’re a community lifeline.”
To Tia, this work isn’t just ministry. It’s a mirror. “What I thought I was bringing to the table, made me reexamine my circumstances. It helps me put my life into perspective.” Through the stories she hears and the resilience she witnesses, she’s reminded of what’s possible.
