Fighting Food Insecurity in Georgia: NLCA’s SNAP Gap Fund Recap

This past fall, millions of families across the nation faced a gut-wrenching challenge. The government shutdown, the longest in U.S. history, triggered a temporary halt to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

In Georgia alone, 1.4 million residents were affected. Here, in DeKalb County, thousands of families suddenly found themselves confronted with food insecurity, scrambling to put food on the table. These numbers are more than statistics. They reflect the precarious reality that many of our neighbors in South DeKalb experienced.

New Life Community Alliance (NLCA) couldn’t just stand by. On October 31, as the threat became urgent, NLCA launched the “Fill the SNAP Gap Fund”, a bold campaign to stock our food distribution center with the items our community needed most. We invited the community to contribute both groceries and financial gifts to help bridge the SNAP gap. And the community showed up in a big way.

The Results

In just a few weeks:

  • Many dropped off groceries from our wishlist
  • 500 donors contributed to the SNAP GAP Fund
  • We surpassed our goal, raising more than $50,000 for urgent food assistance

These donations helped us meet families right where they were at exactly the moment it mattered most.

This Is the NLCA Vision in Action

Moments like these remind us why NLCA exists: to erase the legacy of poverty in South DeKalb neighborhoods and build a future rooted in stability, opportunity, and hope for all.

Together, we’re not just reacting to crises. We’re reshaping what’s possible.
